Frequently asked questions

How are Abitur points calculated?

The approximate conversion is: Points = 17 − 3 × Note. A 1.0 average gives 14–15 points; a 4.0 gives 5 points. The exact Abitur score depends on your state (Bundesland) and subject combination.

Should I use simple or weighted average?

Weighted is more accurate for official purposes. Main subjects (Hauptfächer) typically have double the weight (e.g. 4–5 Stunden vs 2 for Nebenfächer).

What Notendurchschnitt do I need for university?

It varies by programme. Medicine typically requires 1.0–1.2, law 1.5–2.0, popular programmes 1.5–2.5. Check the NC (Numerus Clausus) for your target.
