About the Break-Even Calculator

Calculate how many units you need to sell (or how much revenue you need to earn) to cover all fixed and variable costs. The tool also shows the contribution margin per unit and a target-profit scenario.

Essential for business planning, pricing decisions and investor pitches.

How to use the Break-Even Calculator

  1. Enter total fixed costs (rent, salaries, etc.).
  2. Set the unit selling price.
  3. Enter the variable cost per unit.
  4. Optionally add a target profit.
  5. View break-even units, revenue and the chart.

Formula and method

Break-even units = Fixed costs / (Price − Variable cost)

Frequently asked questions

What counts as a fixed cost?

Costs that do not change with output: rent, insurance, salaries, subscriptions, loan payments.

What is contribution margin?

Selling price minus variable cost per unit. It is the amount each unit "contributes" toward covering fixed costs and then profit.

Can I use this for services?

Yes. Treat each billable hour or project as a "unit". Your hourly rate is the price; direct labour and materials are the variable cost.
